Stretch marks are a common problem for many women. When areas of skin stretch considerably over a short period of time, such as during pregnancy, noticeable lines appear on the skin surface.
ICON Aesthetic System
Using the ICON system, the appearance of stretch marks can now be improved. ICON uses fractional laser technology to deliver pulsed energy to the skin. This targets stretch mark discoloration and stimulates the production of new collagen to improve smoothness. Typically, patients require between three and five treatments to restore skin smoothness and consistency. The procedure is very quick – each treatment can be performed in as little as 30 minutes – and there is little to no downtime.

Questions & Answers
1Who is a Good Candidate for Laser Stretch Mark Removal?
Stretch marks are the result of the skin being stretched farther than the fibers beneath are capable of expanding. This disruption of the tissues under the skin can produce long, ragged marks that are often a different texture than the skin surrounding them. Some stretch marks are soft and smooth, while others can be ridged and dark. Stretch marks are often found on the abdomen, back, and breast and attributed to the expansion of the skin during childbirth. Individuals who have gained and lost an excessive amount of weight may also have stretch marks on their arms, legs, back, and buttocks. Most people who have mild to moderate stretch marks are good candidates for this type of procedure.
2How Many Sessions Does it Take to Effectively Remove Stretch Marks?
Laser stretch mark removal procedures usually last 20 to 30 minutes and will begin to show results within a few days of the first procedure. The thickness, depth, and the extent of damage to the skin will determine the number of procedures the patient will need to begin to decrease the visible appearance of the stretch marks. If the marks are superficial and narrow, the patient may only need three or four sessions. On the other hand, if the stretch marks are long, wide, and deep or are extremely discolored, the patient may need multiple sessions scheduled out over the next several months. The doctor will have to thoroughly evaluate the amount of damage to the tissues before giving an estimate.
3How Long Before the Final Results are Noticeable?
The initial results of a laser scar removal procedure will be apparent within a few days of the first treatment. In most cases, a slight improvement may be noted immediately after the procedure. Within the first few days, however, the production of collagen will have begun and a small amount of the pigmentation may have been eliminated. With each continuing procedure, the results will become more and more noticeable. It may take several weeks after the final procedure for the full effect of the treatment to be visible. Once the procedures have started, the body will continue to produce collagen and elastin that support good skin tone and texture making the results long lasting.
